Exercise Can Be Fun!

Looking for ways to add exercise to your life, but just can’t seem to make it happen?  Maybe you need to inject some fun into your workout routine!

We can all remember fun things that we did as children that kept us active, whether it was playing ball (organized or not, team based or alone – think “7-up” against the wall), biking, roller skating/blading, hula hooping, hop scotch, etc.  These were fun for us as kids, and we didn’t even know we were getting exercise.  So add some fun to your day now, and I’ll bet you’ll add a lot of activity without even noticing it.

Here are some of the fun things I do:

›   take a break from walking and skip to the next light pole or corner, or take turns hopping on one foot

›   jump rope

›   walk on the curb – it’s a challenge for your balance, so it get’s the deep muscles of your core engaged

›   hula hoop – I just got a new one, and I think it is a real giggle.  Check out this photo of me “hooping”!

›   play in the water.  It’s summer, it’s only a couple of months a year, and this is your chance.

›  play catch, especially if you or the person you are playing with isn’t very good – it increases the amount of movement to go chasing the ball.

And finally, my all time favorite:

›   put on some music and dance!

I’d love to hear what you do to have fun with exercise – please add your comments below.
