Running with my Mom

My daughter, Julia, agreed to write a post about running with me:

Here we are after one of our runs. She doesn't look that tired, does she?

It was so nice to have my Mom stay with me last week. We did all sorts of things – shopping, cooking, eating out, going to see my horse and RUNNING! I think everyone enjoys running with someone else– even if you do normally run at different paces. I don’t mind running at my Mom’s pace – it’s an excuse to push her and give myself a little break!

It’s so important to understand that different people, especially those in different age groups have different abilities (hello! that’s why there are age groups for races). When we ran at 10-11 min/mile pace, I wasn’t working too hard, probably at a 3 out of 10. But Mom, who is 35 years older , was working at an 8 out of 10. It makes sense then that we took walking breaks when her heart rate got above 160.

It’s really important to always be mindful of your endurance, strength, energy, age and overall health levels whenever you’re exercising I’m going to enjoy my youth as long as I can – and my Mom is a great model to me of how I can still be active when I age a few more decades!
