I’ve written a lot about walking, and why not? It is the most straightforward form of exercise there is. Most of us learned how to do it, in fact often acted as if we were madly driven to do it by the time we were 14 months old. We couldn’t resist it when we were toddlers.
So why not do it now? All it takes is a pair of shoes, maybe a hat and jacket in this weather, and out the door you go. Too nasty out? Walk around the house or office for 5 minutes every hour and end your day with more energy, less stress and fewer aches than on other days. You will also have reduced your sitting time by an hour – a good thing since we all sit too much, and research is showing sitting is hazardous to your health.
Here’s more ideas for adding easy movement to your day: stand up and walk whenever you are on the phone, use the bathroom on another floor, put the wastebasket and stapler on the other side of the office, park the car a block away from your destination, walk to talk to a colleague or neighbor rather than emailing or using the phone.
What ideas do you have to increase the walking in your life? Share them in the comments.
